In summer, Margarita Kite School is the only school that takes riders to kite by the shores of Wilpattu National Park — one of the largest and oldest national parks in Sri Lanka. Wild, untouched, and with conditions that make it one of the most memorable sessions you'll ever have. Not on any other school's map.

Available summer season only (May–October). Ask us about this trip.

☀️ Summer & ❄️ Winter

Kalpitiya Lagoon — the main learning spot in Sri Lanka

This is our daily playground and the most popular kite spot in Sri Lanka. Wide, shallow and flat — everything a beginner needs, and enough space for advanced riders to progress. Our kite centre is right here, which means rescue boat and walkie-talkie coaching are always available.

🌊 Flat water 🛟 Rescue boat always on water 📡 Walkie-talkie coaching ✈️ Foiling area deeper sections
Pro tip: The lagoon floor has some shells in places — water shoes recommended. We provide water shoes, helmets and buoyancy aids at the school.

Kappalady Lagoon kite spot Sri Lanka Beginner
☀️ Summer only

Kappalady Lagoon — shallow, calm and beginner-friendly

A small flat-water lagoon that works in summer only. Shallow, calm and good for beginners learning the basics. Several schools are based here so it can get crowded. In winter the wind direction is less reliable and it's not suitable for wingfoil due to limited space.

🌊 Flat, shallow ☀️ Summer only 👥 Can get crowded
Pro tip: Best time is around midday when many schools take a break and the lagoon gets quieter. From Kalpitiya we sometimes organise summer downwinders from Kappalady back to Kalpitiya.

☀️ Summer & ❄️ Winter

Dream Spot — all-year playground for progression

One of the most popular kite trips from Margarita Kite School. A 15–20 minute boat ride takes you to a spacious area with flat and slightly choppy sections — versatile and fun in both seasons. Wind is strong in summer, reaching 35 knots on strong days. In winter, it builds around noon and eases by 4:30pm.

⛵ 15–20 min by boat 🌊 Flat & choppy 📅 Both seasons
Pro tip: In summer, the downwinder from Dream Spot to Mini Vella through Puttalam Lagoon is one of the best experiences you can have on a kite in Sri Lanka. In winter, do NOT go through Puttalam Lagoon — wind drops in many sections.

Vella Island kite spot Sri Lanka Advanced ⭐ Best in Sri Lanka
☀️ Summer & ❄️ Winter

Vella Island — the legendary Sri Lanka kite destination

Widely considered the best kite spot in Sri Lanka. Strong, steady wind 5–8 knots more than Kalpitiya Lagoon, long speed runs, and small flat-water lagoons formed inside the island in 2025. One rule at Vella: stay upwind. The island sits at the edge of Wilpattu National Park — if you drift downwind, you're heading into the jungle. We tell students the crocodiles will get them. We're only half joking. Ride here with a 7m kite and know what you're doingd inside the island since 2025. Off-shore conditions mean this is strictly advanced riders only — always with boat support. If you kite here during a full moon, you will never forget it.

⛵ 45–50 min by boat 💨 25–35+ knots ☀️ Summer & ❄️ Winter 🪁 Bring 7–9m kites
Pro tip: Always go with someone who knows the spot. Boat support is non-negotiable. Bring your small kite.
Ippantivu Mini Vella kite spot Sri Lanka Advanced 🗺️ MKS discovered
☀️ Summer only

Ippantivu (Mini Vella) — hidden gem in Puttalam Lagoon

Also known as Mini Vella, this hidden spot inside Puttalam Lagoon was discovered and explored by the Margarita team. Thanks to a venturi effect between the islands, wind here often feels stronger than elsewhere. Flat water and unique conditions. Note: the sandbar has been shrinking since 2025 — always check before going.

⛵ 25 min by boat 💨 Venturi effect 🌊 Flat water
Pro tip: Always check current conditions with us before planning this trip — the sandbar changes year to year. We know this spot better than anyone.
Navy Point kitesurf spot Sri Lanka Advanced 🗺️ MKS discovered
❄️ Winter + ☀️ Summer

Navy Point — flat water and legendary downwinds

Located at the end of Dutch Bay, Navy Point used to work only in winter — but since 2025 a new flat-water area also opens in summer, making it more versatile. Off-shore conditions mean boat support is essential. In winter it's the classic starting point for the downwind to Dream Spot.

⛵ 30 min by boat 📅 Winter + Summer 🌊 Flat water
Pro tip: In winter, the downwind from Navy Point to Dream Spot is one of the best runs of the season. In summer, it's the perfect finishing point for the Vella Island downwind.
Donkey Point wave kite spot Sri Lanka Intermediate+
☀️ Summer only

Donkey Point — waves and ocean riding

About 10 km south of Kalpitiya, Donkey Point is the area's main wave spot. Small to medium waves with steady cross on-shore wind — the go-to for strapless riders and anyone who wants to mix it up after days on the flat lagoon. Also great for wingfoil. Keep distance from the nearby military base when riding close to shore.

🌊 Waves 🏄 Strapless & wingfoil 🚗 20 min from Kalpitiya
Pro tip: Reachable by tuk tuk, car or even bike from Kalpitiya town. A great change of scenery after flat-water sessions.
Adam's Bridge Mannar kite spot Sri Lanka Advanced expedition
☀️ Summer only

Adam's Bridge (Mannar) — remote adventure kiting

A chain of sandbanks and small islands that once connected Sri Lanka to India. Remote, wild, and with a landscape unlike anything else in the country. This is expedition-style kiting — no facilities, exposed conditions, for experienced riders only. If you're looking for an adventure that few kiters have done, this is it.

🗺️ Remote expedition ☀️ Summer only 🏕️ No facilities 🎯 Advanced only
Pro tip: Plan logistics carefully — food, water and safety support. A trip to Adam's Bridge is more of an adventure than a regular session. Worth every bit of planning.
