Train to be an IKO instructor — in one of the best spots in Asia

The IKO Instructor certification is recognized internationally, opening up work opportunities at kite schools across the world. From the Caribbean to Southeast Asia to the Mediterranean — the IKO credential gets you in the door.

"Earn your certification as an international kitesurf instructor through Margarita Kite School's IKO courses in Sri Lanka and travel the world while doing what you love."

To become an IKO instructor you need to complete two five-day courses: first the ATC (Assistant Training Course) and then the ITC (Instructor Training Course). We run both in Kalpitiya, back to back, so you can complete your full certification in under two weeks. The ITC is conducted by Eusebi — our co-founder and one of the few IKO Examiners in Asia — which means you're being assessed and trained by someone who has been teaching and certifying instructors on this lagoon for over ten years.

Who can join the ATC & ITC

The courses are designed for experienced kitesurfers. You need to be at IKO Level 4 — which means you can ride comfortably, perform jumps and grabs, and handle transitions confidently.

If you're not at that level yet but want to get there, we offer coaching sessions before the course starts. Safran and Issuru — our most experienced local instructors — work with pre-ITC riders specifically on the jumping, transitions and upwind control you'll need. Some riders join us a week or two early and then go straight into the ATC.

Starting from scratch? If you are new to kitesurfing, it's also possible to complete an intensive progression course at MKS and become an IKO instructor in approximately twelve weeks — starting from zero.

Prerequisites for the ATC

  • IKO Level 4 kitesurfer (certified or equivalent)
  • Able to perform jumps, grabs and transitions
  • Comfortable riding upwind in both directions
  • Basic self-rescue knowledge
  • Registered on the IKO website before the course

Prerequisites for the ITC

  • Completed the ATC course
  • IKO Assistant certification
  • Registered and enrolled on IKO platform

Questions about the IKO instructor courses at MKS

What is the difference between the ATC and the ITC?
The ATC (Assistant Training Course) is the first step. It covers theoretical foundations — weather, kite aerodynamics, equipment — and practical beach management skills. It's the prerequisite for the ITC. The ITC (Instructor Training Course) focuses on how to teach: lesson planning, instructional methodology, and real teaching practice with beginner students.
Is the IKO instructor certification valid worldwide?
Yes. The IKO Level 1 Instructor certification is recognized internationally and accepted by kite schools in over 70 countries. It's the standard credential for working as a professional kitesurf instructor globally.
Do I need to be an experienced kitesurfer to join?
Yes. You need to be at IKO Level 4 — comfortable riding upwind, performing jumps and grabs, and doing transitions. If you're not there yet, we can offer coaching before the course to get you ready. It's also possible to start from scratch and complete everything in around 12 weeks through an intensive progression program.
Can I do both the ATC and ITC in the same trip?
Yes — and that's exactly how most people do it. We schedule the ATC and ITC back to back (July 1–5 ATC, July 7–11 ITC, for example) so you can complete your full certification in one trip to Sri Lanka.
Why do the ITC course in Sri Lanka?
Kalpitiya has consistent wind, a flat lagoon ideal for beginner teaching practice, and a well-established kite school with experienced IKO examiners. Combining the certification with time in Sri Lanka is practical, affordable and genuinely enjoyable. The conditions here are as good as anywhere in the world for a course like this.
Where exactly do I register and pay for the courses?
Registration and payment go through the IKO website directly. Find Margarita Kite School under the Sri Lanka / Kalpitiya listing and select the ATC and ITC courses. Then contact us to confirm your place and get logistics sorted.
