Our Kite School in Sri Lanka — Kalpitiya Lagoon, Since 2014

We started Margarita in 2014 because we'd found the best lagoon to learn kite and we wanted to share it. IKO certified, radio helmets every session, rescue boat on the water, reef booties included. Come ride with us.

Margarita is compared to other schools the first one who arrives and the last one who leaves the lagoon. So if you don't wanna miss out on good wind, book with them. Highly, highly recommend.

Who you'll be riding with

The people behind Margarita Kite School

After 10+ years at this lagoon, the team is a mix of founders who still teach, local instructors who know every shift in the wind, and international coaches who came for a season and never quite left.

Ruben & Eusebi — founders

They started MKS in 2014 and they're both still on the water most days. Eusebi is an IKO Assistant Examiner — one of very few in Asia. Ruben left Barcelona for Kalpitiya and never looked back. Current obsession: wingfoil.

Issuru — local instructor

Grew up in Kalpitiya. When the wind is on, Issuru has the kites ready at the beach before the boat leaves. Every piece of gear, every session. IKO certified, local knowledge nobody else has.

Safran — senior instructor

Been teaching at Margarita longer than most. Big, calm, endlessly patient. If you're struggling on day three with water starts, Safran is who you want in the water with you. Students consistently mention him by name in reviews.

IKO Level 3 Course

From zero to riding — 9 hours, step by step

Our kitesurf lessons follow the IKO curriculum. With our 9h private kitesurf course, most students are riding both directions downwind by the end of the course — and some of them upwind too. Here's what happens hour by hour:

1–3hours

Kite setup, safety and first flights on the beach

  • Setting up and packing down the kite
  • Safety systems — how and when to use them
  • First piloting on the beach — wind window control
  • Flying with one hand, launching and landing
4–6hours

Into the water — body dragging and kite power

  • Body dragging downwind and upwind
  • Flying in the power zone in the water
  • Relaunching from the water
  • Self-rescue and pack-down in deep water
7–9hours

Water start and your first rides — IKO Level 3

  • Water start theory and practice
  • Riding in both directions
  • Speed control and stopping
  • Right of way rules + first upwind attempts

We personalise every course to your level. If you pick it up fast, we push further. If you need more time on something, we take it.

FAQ

FAQ — kite school in Sri Lanka

Do I need any experience to start?
None at all. The beginner course starts from absolute zero. With private lessons, most students are riding both directions downwind by the end of the course — and some of them upwind too. The radio helmet is a big part of why progress is so fast here.
How long does it take to learn to kitesurf?
The IKO Level 3 course is 9 hours. With private lessons, most students are riding both directions downwind by the end of the course — and some of them upwind too. Getting to consistent upwind riding (IKO L3K) usually takes a few more hours on top of that.
What's included in the lesson price?
Equipment, boat transport, radio helmet and IKO certificate on completion. Students need sun cream (reef-safe), sunglasses, a hat and reef booties.
When is the best time to come for lessons?
Both seasons work well for learning. December–March has lighter wind (16–20 knots) that builds from late morning — which actually suits beginners well, and means mornings are free for dolphin trips, a bike ride to the village, or yoga before the lagoon comes alive. May–October is stronger (20–30 knots) and in from early morning — you eat fast and get on the water. Read our full kite season guide to decide what's right for you.
What if there's no wind during my lessons?
You only pay for hours actually delivered. We don't charge for time lost to no wind — no wind, no charge.
Can I combine lessons with accommodation?
Yes — our kitesurf packs bundle both from €235 per person. Also available as solo traveller packs.
Do you offer wingfoil too?
Yes. We run wingfoil lessons at the same lagoon. Great on lighter days or if you want to try both.
Can I become an IKO instructor here?
Yes. We run IKO Instructor Training Courses (ITC) for experienced riders. Get in touch for dates and requirements.
How flexible are you with payments and lesson scheduling?
Very. We adapt to you — not the other way around. Shift a session, adjust the course structure, sort out payment differently — just talk to us. We're not a factory. We want people to learn well, stay safe and come back.
