The people behind Margarita Kite School

Meet the team — passionate riders, real instructors

Two Spanish founders who have been teaching at Kalpitiya Lagoon since 2014, plus a team of IKO-certified instructors from different countries who teach in 5 languages. This is who you'll be on the water with.

Margarita Kite School started with a simple idea: create the kind of kite school we always wished existed. One where the teaching is serious, the vibe is relaxed and the place feels like home — not a tourist operation. Ten years later, over 1,200 students certified and still going.

Eusebi

Co-founder & IKO instructor

Born in Spain, obsessed with the wind. Eusebi is an IKO Assistant Examiner — one of the few in Asia — which means he doesn't just teach kitesurfing, he certifies the instructors who go on to teach it around the world. He has been at this lagoon since 2014 and his coaching style is technical but calm — the kind of instructor who explains things twice without making you feel bad for asking.

Ruben

Co-founder & IKO instructor

The other half of the Margarita story. Ruben left a finance career in Barcelona in his early 30s, arrived in Kalpitiya, learned to kite and never went back. He built the school from scratch and got certified as an instructor along the way. Still teaches. Current obsession: wingfoil. On the water he's as comfortable teaching beginners as he is shredding with advanced riders.

Two Spaniards, one lagoon, one dream

"The kite connects people regardless of where they come from or what they believe. That's why we do this — and why we'll keep doing it."

We came to Kalpitiya in 2014 because we'd heard about the lagoon. Flat water, steady wind, warm, no crowds — the kind of conditions you spend years looking for. We decided to stay and build something here.

What started as a small school has grown into a reference point for kitesurfing in Sri Lanka — Nº1 on Tripadvisor, recommended by Lonely Planet, over 1,200 students certified. But the thing we're most proud of is the atmosphere. People arrive as strangers and leave as part of something.

We're still here. Still teaching. Still riding every chance we get. Some evenings Ruben fires up the wood oven and makes pizza. Some evenings it's paella. On no-wind days someone organises volleyball or cards. A tuk tuk guy shows up some afternoons at the kite centre with his speaker and a tray of bread and pastries — one of those details that's impossible to plan and impossible to forget.

IKO-certified instructors from around the world

The team also includes local instructors who have been with Margarita for years. Issuru grew up in Kalpitiya — he knows every shift in the wind on this lagoon and has the gear ready at the beach before the boat leaves. Safran is one of the most patient and experienced instructors here; if you're struggling on day three with water starts, Safran is who you want in the water with you. Every season we also bring in certified international instructors, which means we can teach in multiple languages and bring different coaching perspectives to the water.

Come and learn with us

You'll arrive and someone will know your name. By day three you'll know the team by theirs. That's not a claim — that's just how it works at a camp this size. From your first kite launch to your first downwind run, we'll be there.
